When Dust Makes Breathing Harder -  Why P2 Masks Matter for Forklift Drivers with Asthma

Sometimes a simple conversation about PPE can make you stop and think.

Recently we heard of a young forklift driver who had been unwell enough to spend time in hospital. He said he has asthma and that his work environment can sometimes be quite dusty. He had noticed that the dust could make his breathing worse, and understandably, he was concerned about what that might mean for him at work with regards to taking time off and running out of sick days.

It highlighted an important point - PPE isn't just about ticking a health and safety box. The right PPE can help protect workers from exposure to hazards that may aggravate an existing respiratory condition.

Dust and asthma – why does it matter?

Asthma causes the airways in the lungs to become inflamed and more sensitive. For someone with asthma, breathing in airborne particles can potentially irritate those airways and contribute to symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, chest tightness or shortness of breath.

A forklift driver may encounter dust from a range of sources, including:

  • Dust from concrete, aggregate or other materials

  • Wood dust

  • General warehouse dust

  • Soil and dirt

  • Dust created by vehicle and forklift movements

  • Airborne particles generated by loading and unloading materials

The exact risk depends on the workplace and what is creating the dust, so it is important that the workplace identifies the specific airborne hazards rather than assuming all dust is the same.

Why a P2 disposable mask can help

A P2 disposable respirator is designed to filter fine airborne particles and can provide an important layer of protection when a worker may be exposed to particulate dust.

For someone working in a dusty environment, wearing an appropriate P2 respirator can help reduce the amount of airborne particulate matter they breathe in.

And there's another important consideration for someone with asthma - comfort and breathability matter.

Some P2 disposable respirators are available with an exhalation valve. The valve is designed to make exhalation easier and can reduce the build up of heat and moisture inside the mask, which some people find more comfortable, particularly when working for longer periods.

However, a valve does not make the respirator more protective against particles entering the mask. It is primarily a comfort/breathing feature, and whether a valved respirator is appropriate depends on the workplace requirements and whether source control is also needed.

Fit is just as important as the mask

One of the biggest mistakes people make with disposable respirators is thinking that simply putting one on is enough.

A P2 respirator needs to form a good seal around the face. Facial hair, incorrect positioning or the wrong size/style can compromise that seal.

That's why workers should be shown how to correctly put on and check their respirator, and workplaces should consider fit testing where respiratory protective equipment is required.

A P2 respirator should also be replaced when it becomes dirty, damaged, difficult to breathe through or otherwise no longer suitable for use.

Why should a forklift driver keep P2 masks in their PPE kit?

For our forklift driver, we would recommend having suitable P2 disposable respirators readily available as part of his workplace PPE kit where the risk assessment identifies exposure to airborne particles.

That means they are there when he needs them rather than having to search for one after the dust has already become a problem.

A simple PPE kit could include:

P2 disposable respirators
✔ Safety glasses
✔ Hi-vis workwear
✔ Safety footwear
✔ Hearing protection where required
✔ Gloves appropriate to the task

The important thing to remember is that PPE is the last line of defence. If there is excessive dust in a workplace, the first question should be: Can we eliminate or reduce the dust exposure at its source?

That could involve ventilation, dust suppression, housekeeping, changing work processes or other controls. PPE then provides an additional layer of protection.

What is lung function testing?

The conversation also raised another really important workplace health question - How do we know whether someone's lungs are functioning normally?

That's where lung function testing, often called spirometry, can be useful.

Spirometry is a test that measures how well a person can move air in and out of their lungs.

During the test, the person breathes into a device called a spirometer. They will usually be asked to take a deep breath and then breathe out as hard and as completely as possible.

The test can provide measurements such as:

  • FEV1 – the amount of air a person can forcefully breathe out in the first second

  • FVC – the total amount of air they can forcefully breathe out

  • FEV1/FVC ratio – helps assess how easily air is flowing out of the lungs

For workers who are potentially exposed to respiratory hazards, lung function testing can provide a useful baseline measurement and, where appropriate, allow health professionals to monitor changes over time.

It's particularly important to understand that workplace respiratory health isn't simply about asking:

"Do you feel okay?"

A person may not notice gradual changes in their lung function, which is why appropriate health monitoring can be valuable in workplaces where there is a recognised respiratory risk.

Asthma and workplace exposure

For someone who already has asthma, it's particularly important to discuss workplace exposures with their doctor or other appropriate health professional.

If symptoms are occurring at work, becoming worse during particular tasks, or improving when away from work, that information is worth discussing with a healthcare professional.

PPE should never be used as a substitute for appropriate medical care or asthma management.

For our young forklift driver, the key message was simple:

Look after your lungs now – don't wait until breathing becomes a serious problem.

Having the right respiratory PPE available, understanding the hazards in your workplace, and getting appropriate health monitoring where necessary can all form part of a sensible approach to respiratory safety.
